JOB TITLE: Technical Designer

Garnet Hill, a growing high-end multi-channel marketer specializing in original designs in clothing and home décor is seeking a Technical Designer to join our team.

JOB SUMMARY: Execute the technical development of Garnet Hill’s private-label programs, working closely with the designers, buyers, and manufacturers to ensure that product specification, fit, and construction meet Garnet Hill’s quality standards.

  • Work closely with merchandising in order to translate product concepts into technical drawings
  • Produce thorough and accurate technical drawings and proto sheets, including construction details, testing requirements, and packaging and labeling specifications
  • Assume responsibility for all technical aspects of the product development process, including measuring samples, relaying fit and construction comments to manufacturers, developing fit, grade and/or construction specifications, and reviewing TOP before shipments are released
  • Review Top of Production samples and communicate concerns and/or issues to immediate supervisor and Merchandise Quality to resolve problems
  • Review return rates each season to identify issues and revise product specifications accordingly
  • Gather information necessary for successful product development and maintain complete and accurate records within the product development software system; keep sample data tracking system current; includes but is not limited to production of technical drawings and proto sheets
  • Review all photo samples for accuracy; make note of discrepancies on photo sample tags and review with Merchandising
  • Communicate effectively with other departments, including Merchandise Quality, Customer Service, and Web teams, to ensure timely and accurate sharing of pertinent product information/issues on both private-label and branded styles
  • Communicate closely with vendors and factories to promote strong working relationships and ensure seasonal timeline compliance on all styles
  • Stay current with all aspects of product development for each season, reviewing seasonal return rates, concepts, line content, and product performance issues
  • Stay current with any technology and training that will aid in the successful completion of the technical design of our products
  • May include travel to factories
  • Other responsibilities as directed and necessary for the business

    • Complete all fittings of prototype garments
  • 3+ years technical design experience
  • Strong working experience and knowledge of product specifications, flat sketching, product fitting, and sewing
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Experience in pattern making a plus
  • Factory experience/exposure a plus
  • Knowledge of footwear and accessories a plus

    • Experience and knowledge of the product development process
    • Strong analytical skills, with working knowledge of the components of garment costing
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and web-based PLM systems desired
