JOB TITLE: Associate Technical Designer

REPORTS TO: Director of Product Development or Sourcing/Product Development Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

Work closely with the Technical Designers to assist in execution of the technical development of Garnet Hill’s private-label programs to ensure that product specification, fit and construction meet Garnet Hill’s quality standards.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the Technical Designers and Merchandising in order to translate product concepts into technical drawings
  • Assist in producing thorough and accurate technical drawings, proto sheets, construction instructions,  and packaging and labeling specifications
  • In conjunction with the Technical Designers, assist in measuring samples and making fit and/or construction comments as necessary for samples developed for Garnet Hill
  • Partner with the Technical Designers in the review of branded and/or developed samples for fit and construction before shipments arrive
  • In conjunction with the Technical Designers, review Top of Production(T.O.P.) samples and communicate with Quality Control to anticipate and resolve any problems
  • Assist in the preparation of material for the review of return rates each season to identify issues and revise product specifications accordingly
  • Assist the Technical Design team in gathering information necessary for successful product development and maintain complete and accurate records within the product development software system, including but not limited to producing technical drawings, producing proto sheets, keeping sample-data tracking system current, and producing packaging and labeling specifications
  • In conjunction with the Technical Designers, review all photo samples for accuracy, making note of any discrepancies on photo sample tags and reviewing with merchandising
  • Communicate closely with vendors and factories to promote strong working relationships and ensure seasonal time-line compliance on all styles 
  • Follow up on sample status by season to ensure time and action is met, updating tracking documents and communicating status to Technical Designers on a weekly basis
  • Stay current with all aspects of product development for each season including  reviewing concepts, line content and  product performance issues, in particular, seasonal return rates
  • Stay current with any technology and training that will aid in the successful completion of the technical design of our products
  • Other responsibilities as directed and necessary for the business

    • APPAREL SPECIFIC:
    • Attend fit sessions as requested; assist ,as needed, to complete all fittings of prototype garments
    • Assist in the development of fit and grade specifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience in a technical design position
  • Experience in pattern making a plus

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and web-based PLM systems desired
  • Knowledge of product specifications, flat sketching, product fitting and sewing

    APPAREL SPECIFIC
    • Understanding of grading
