The legacy of our Signature Flannel

For us, flannel is where it all began.

In December of 1976, on a quest to share the bliss that is a European flannel sheet, we launched a business. At the time, we had only a couple of tiny magazine ads and brochures with flannel swatches to drop in the mail.

Times have changed, but our customers’ love of flannel has only flourished. Today our Signature Flannel Bedding is still made in Europe, using the same traditional methods we used so many years ago — it’s flannel made the way we think flannel should be made.

And it’s still pure cotton. Signature Flannel has a denser weave than most, creating a weightier, more durable sheet. Brushed multiple times on both sides (a rare thing), it has a plush, thick finish that is supremely cozy and resistant to pilling.

A warm layer in winter and cooler than a blanket in summer, Garnet Hill Signature Flannel is simply heavenly. But don’t take our word for it; check out the reviews written by customers who’ve already fallen for it.

Signature Flannel launched our business. We hope the next great customer review it receives will be yours.

The Gift of Coziness: Flannel Bedding

Garnet Hill Flannel Bedding

How to Give the Gift of Coziness

Funny thing about winter. In other seasons, rough weather – floods, hurricanes, tornadoes – gets us out of the house in a hurry, to safety. But fierce cold and snow keep us home. Where, if we’re lucky, we can snuggle up under warm flannel sheets until the storm passes.

Given as a gift, a set of flannel sheets says I care about you, and want you to be comfortable when the temperature drops. Find flannel sheets that are all-cotton, and made the traditional way, with a denser weave. Selecting a quality product makes for an unforgettable gift for someone special.

Our Signature Flannel sheets are the perfect option. Part of this bedding’s charm is that it’s crafted in a fifth-generation family-owned mill that’s been operating in Germany since 1885 —indeed, two of its present employees are the 4th generation of their families to work there. That’s the experience level needed to master the napping, or brushing, process that makes the flannel exquisite to the touch.

The technique is as much art as science. During the flannel-napping process, skilled craftsmen apply just the right amount of pressure to the material to open up cotton fibers without overstressing them. Depending upon humidity, temperature, and other factors, these flannel sheets will be napped up to 12 times on both sides.

If you haven’t yet, check out these videos on our flannel process.

We should all nap on flannel so exquisitely napped.

Welcome to Flannel Season. Coziness, found.

Goodbye, summer. Hello, fall. It’s a glorious time up here in New England…

The sun still warms the days, but the evenings dip down and get chilly, beckoning for layers. Children settle into their new school and after-school schedules, and we tend to grab a sweater before rushing out the door in the morning. We’re trading beach days for apple pickings, and backyard barbecues for tailgating.

It’s a time to nest, get inspired by the changing colors, curl up, and get cozy. It’s a time to seek out softness, comfort, and warmth – like our flannel sheets or PJs. We believe quality matters, just take a look:

What’s your go-to cozy piece when the weather starts to change?

Garnet Hill Heads to the Hamptons

Garnet Hill Store in Bridgehampton, NYThis year, we’re summering in the Hamptons! We’re opening our retail doors for the season in Long Island’s enchanting east-end enclave of Bridgehampton. The store will give Garnet Hill fans a touch-and-feel experience with our best products: rich bedding in soft linen, crisp cotton, and woven silks, plus cashmere robes, airy cotton fashions, distinctive accessories, and more.

Customers will be able to peruse Garnet Hill’s bedding and home decor, as well as favorites in sleepwear and apparel. The store will offer everything from the authentic European cotton flannel sheets that launched our company, to the full array of beautifully designed products that we’re known for today!

“We’ve put a lot of thought and care into our premiere store’s design and location. And Bridgehampton — with a charming downtown that is both low-key and a destination for home design resources — felt like a perfect fit for us,” says Claire Spofford, Garnet Hill president. “We think customers who know and love us will be excited to ‘meet’ us for the first time and we’ll be a pleasant surprise to new customers as well.”

Located at 2424 Main Street (also known as Montauk Highway) in the center of Bridgehampton’s downtown district, the interior of the 1,700 square foot store juxtaposes the honest simplicity of our New England roots with the comforts and casual glamour of the modern coastal lifestyle.

The official grand opening of the store will happen Saturday, June 27. We’d love to see you there!

We Went to Germany So You Could
Go to Sleep

Sleep is the last refuge of the over-busy soul. As long as you don’t bring your smartphone to bed (you don’t, do you?) it invites you to escape today long enough to recover for tomorrow.

So if you’re going to splurge anywhere, splurge where you snooze. On Garnet Hill Signature Flannel Sheets from Germany.

They’re 6.1 ounce flannel, a weightier, denser weave than most. Brushed an extravagant 10 times on both sides to be about as soft as soft gets.

When we first sold them, our European manufacturers (English blokes at the time) felt it was wasteful to make a fitted sheet that was brushed on both sides, since the underside would not be slept on. In pursuit of quality we persisted, and the nice folks across the pond eventually accommodated.

That was during the energy shortage of the 1970s. You look like you weren’t even born then, but trust us, after the price of oil spiked, thermostats were turned down faster than the volume of dad’s station wagon radio when “Jive Talkin’” came on.

So we invited customers to warm up in flannel. And they’ve indulged ever since. Lately, in Grandstand Floral and Heathered flannels, too.

Still, before you join the bedding connoisseurs, a few cautions.

Soft, soft, soft. Hard to get up in the cold mornings wrapped up in these.”

The only complaint I have about them is that they are so cozy my teenage son cannot get out of bed in the morning.”

The BEST bed to climb into on a cold winter’s night is one made with Garnet Hill Flannel sheets! I’ve been buying them for years and it’s one of the only things I actually like about winter.”

My husband even commented on how nice his sleep has been since putting them on the bed … now that’s results! :)”

They don’t pill like every other flannel sheet I ever met.”

Little or no shrinkage.”

I am almost ready to pass on Garnet Hill flannel sheets that I bought in 1991.”
