How to style a playful brights bedroom with Rachel Shingleton

We invited Rachel Shingleton to help show us how to style a colorful bedroom using pieces from our Playful Brights collection. Rachel is an Oklahoma City interior designer, creating colorful, stylish homes for clients who want individualistic, timeless interiors. The look of our main bedroom at the lake house is all about layering comfort, color, and texture. Thanks to Garnet Hill, it’s received a beautifully bright spring makeover with loads of classic stripes and natural-fiber designs to create a comfortable, livable escape.

Here are my tips for creating the look in your home:

For big impact, think about scale.

The key to making the look work is choosing a larger scale print to pair with a smaller print. In this room, I went with the reversible Oxford stripe comforter in blue and made sure that the larger scale stripe is the one facing outwards for the bigger statement.

Layers make a room feel luxurious.

Go for a contrasting mix of materials: plush nautical comforters and rustic silk quilts against crisp percale sheets. Finish the look with matching plush Euro-size pillow shams to make it all come together beautifully.

Take your layering to the floor; I even layer rugs.

Layers help make a room feel finished, and in our space, there’s lots of layers to consider. Add a boho vibe to your space by layering the Jute & Pebbled Wool Rug over an existing older rug like I did here. Plus, those added layers feel so plush to step onto first thing in the morning when you get out of bed.

Neutrals make an accent color pop.

A neutral backdrop allows for endless color combinations. Our bright-white main bedroom with its natural-toned headboard allows me to change things up by simply swapping out bedding. I always want to feel like I can achieve many different looks with my foundation pieces. Switch it up a bit by adding a pop of color, like the peachy pink of the Blissful Silk Quilt and Shams in Blush. I love the contrast of textures and the casual yet refined luxury it adds to the bedroom. It’s livable luxury, and it scores bonus points because it’s machine washable.

Use accents as your doorways to testing new colors.

Blush has been a huge trend for a few seasons now, but this spring it has more of a peachy twist. I love the opportunity to experiment with color combinations by layering in unexpected hues for a fresh update. Plus, it’s a great way to test colors you might not normally want to commit to in larger doses. My best advice to color-shy clients is to test the waters with colorful accessories like pillows and bedding. It’s a low-risk way to freshen any existing space, not to mention easy on the wallet.

Natural textures add a relaxed coastal vibe.

In addition to rattan and bamboo, jute-and-wool rugs are a great mix of textures that keep a space feeling polished yet comfortable.
