CREATE THE LOOK: the classic cottage bedroom

The Classic Cottage look features comfortable, tried-and-true pieces reinvented in a fresh, sunny palette.

To create this look, follow these seven easy tips:

1 | Go bright (or white) with the paint color.

You want the room to be sunny and cheerful, a place that makes you happy, a place you’ll want to spend time in. When choosing paint colors, consider shades that accentuate and amplify natural light: soft yellows, sky blues, warm neutrals. When in doubt, there’s nothing like brilliant white, the ultimate clean, blank canvas on which to design your room.

2 | Then, start with the sheets.

For the Cottage look, we love Siesta Bedding. These sheets are made from soft organic cotton, and they’re offered in florals, stripes, and an array of solid hues to mix and match. They’re also washed for softness, creating relaxed texture and beautiful drape. By juxtaposing the botanical print with stripes and the various solids, you create a bed that’s rich with depth and dimension.

3 | Enhance the loft with a comforter.

You’ll want to create a bed that looks as plush and comfy as it feels, so we recommend adding plenty of pillows and a fluffy duvet dressed in a duvet cover

Other options would be our Essential Comforter or the Reversible Lightweight Comforter, designs you don’t need to put inside a cover. We love the reversible style, because it offers two different scales of stripes and coordinates with the patterned Siesta sheets.

4 | Next, select a quilt.

Quilts are essential to capturing the homespun charm of the Classic Cottage look. For instant sunshine, try the Camille Quilt. It’s bright and colorful with its happy, retro-inspired prints. Plus, did you know that most of our quilts are quilted by hand? It’s an artisan touch that adds dimension and makes each design special.

5 | For even more texture, mix fabrics.

Our Relaxed-Linen Bedding embodies everything that the Classic Cottage look celebrates: it’s offered in a wide array of colors and patterns and embellishments, it layers beautifully, and is comfortable all year long.

We love the way a white Embellished Relaxed-Linen Bedding gives you ruffles, crochet, and eyelet as layering options. When creating a cottage-inspired bed, the more embellishment, the better.

6 | Make a statement with an artisan rug.

Whether braided, hooked, tufted, or woven, our rugs are crafted by hand. Each design is infused with modern color and crafted using time-honored techniques.

Adding the right rug to a space, instantly elevates the look. To add cozy cottage charm, try the Cutting Garden Chenille Rug, the Fair Isle Hooked Wool Rug, or the Vintage Floral Hooked Wool Round Rug

7 | Go eclectic with the accents.

From storage baskets and leather poufs to comfy throws and decorative pillows, finish your Classic Cottage room with your favorite home decor pieces and accessories. The objects that you incorporate into the design should look collected over time, to give the room its personal, lived-in vibe. Edit as you go, balancing practical and decorative elements that make your design story come to life.
