Slipper Boot Design Contest: meet the winners, Peter and Eva

More than 800 entries from kids ages 4–12 were submitted for this year’s Slipper Boot Design Contest, and they were filled with so much creativity! Thanks to everyone who participated — we had an absolute blast reviewing your designs.

Recently we had the chance to learn a bit more about the inspiration behind each of the two winning slippers, and the artists who created them.

Meet Peter, age 5, of Chatham, MA, who designed a Dalmatian Fire Dog.

Here’s what Peter had to say about the experience:

What made you want to enter our Slipper Boot Design Contest?

Because I like art and Mom told me I could help other kids feel better.

Could you tell us a little about why you chose to design a Dalmatian Fire Dog?

My brother was named the “Honorary Chief” of the Chatham Fire Department. They have a Dalmatian statue there who is named Duke.

This is Jesse, Peter’s inspiration for the slipper design. Jesse fought neuroblastoma for 4 years before passing in 2018.

What would you like to do when you grow up?

I want to be an artist who paints and draws.

What is your favorite part of the school day/favorite subject?

I love gym.

What is your favorite food?

Cheese pizza

What’s your favorite thing to do after school/on the weekend?

I like to build with LEGOs and play basketball.

What is your favorite book/movie/tv show?

The LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE

And Eva, age 12, of Houston, TX who designed a Giraffe.

Here’s what Eva had to say about the experience:

What made you want to enter our Slipper Boot Design Contest?

I enjoy art and helping people out, so when my mom told me about the contest, I knew I wanted to enter. I also wish to bring joy to the children at St. Jude, because my parents are both cancer doctors and have told me how hard it is to have this illness.

Could you tell us a little about why you chose to design a Giraffe?

My baby cousin’s favorite animal is a giraffe, and when I was trying to come up with a design she came to mind.

What would you like to do when you grow up?

I would like to be somewhere in the arts, maybe a photographer or a painter. If not, I might want to be a lawyer or a college professor.

At twelve years old, Eva already has quite an impressive art portfolio!

What is your favorite part of the school day/favorite subject?

Out of my core classes my favorite is writing, but I also enjoy Texas history and science. My favorite classes overall, however, are my electives, which are art, dance, and theater.

What is your favorite food?

I like sushi, avocado, mango, and soft-shell crab.

What’s your favorite thing to do after school/on the weekend?

When I’m not in school I like watching YouTube and Netflix, shopping with my mom, and going to circus classes.

What is your favorite book/movie/tv show?

My favorite book is “A Madness So Discreet” Mindy McGiggins, my favorite movie is a tie between “Billy Elliot” and “Forest Gump”, and my favorite TV show is “The Flash”.

Thank you, Peter and Eva! And a huge thank you to all of the kids who participated.

Stay tuned — we’ll be delivering the winning slippers to the kids of St. Jude as soon as they are finished!
