Notes from the Road: Our Design Team Hits Brimfield!

Brimfield Inspiration

For a little inspiration, our home designers traveled to Brimfield, the site of a world-famous annual antique exposition in Western Massachusetts. They spent a few days perusing the tents and looking for treasures to spark ideas and influence collections to come.

We attend Brimfield for inspiration and use the experience as a design resource. I’ve been going for years, and can tell you firsthand that everyone has his or her own personal Brimfield experience. It’s so easy to become overwhelmed. My approach is to walk around and take it all in and see what speaks to me. It’s such a creative place filled with creative people.”

Brimfield: Global Influence

There was a strong global vibe to this year’s show. From the vendors to the crowd, it was a fusion of cultures, languages, and design influences. The show encompassed everything from coast-to-coast Americana to pieces from cultures around the world. German woodworking, antique French fabrics, authentic Persian rugs — it was a world party. And there was a wonderful mix of new and aged goods.”

Brimfield: Utility & Leather

Leather, midcentury modern, and Japanese design were everywhere, in everything from furniture to fashion. A heavy industrial aesthetic was also trending. Think utility, aged tools, and metal wares — and even some steam punk. Some of my favorite spots were the Swedish-design tent, the booth of vintage French textiles, and the fabric show. ”

Brimfield: Plaid, Signs, & Pillows

Retro signs to letterpress, fonts, and use of words as graphics continue to be huge design trends. There were also many people wearing plaid flannel shirts — and the booths mimicked this passion for plaid. It seemed to be in high demand. It was also nice to see lots of new production from repurposed materials, like feedbags made into messenger bags and old woven kilim rugs as pillow covers and upholstery. Brilliant!”
