Quilts are a staple in the Garnet Hill bedding collection, which is why we’re so excited when a new design launches. Our latest creation, the Tile Appliqué Quilt, features a unique blend of traditional quilt-making techniques and modern elements. We recently caught up with Mary Steenburgh, our head home designer, to discuss how this beautiful quilt was made.
Hawaiian Inspired: What is Reverse Appliqué?
We’re renowned for our pieced (assembled from strips or patchwork) and wholecloth (using a continuous piece of fabric) quilts. This season, we wanted to design something fresh and unique, so we tried our hand at this traditional “Hawaiian” quilt-making process. Hawaiian quilts usually utilize two colors, and feature “reverse-appliqué” construction. Rather than applying appliqué to the top of a base fabric, reverse appliqué exposes the base color through cutout shapes and motifs. We thought that this innovative technique was due for some fun in the sun, since the collection was taking a turn for toward the tropical.
Oh, What A Little Geometric Can Do…
This contemporary quilt is a twist on traditional heirloom-quality design hits a high note when it comes to the trends. Its tropical shapes are a fresh take on geometric graphics, the trend that’s so popular today. We love the cool two-color combo that we’ve selected: a soothing shade of blue, accentuated by a pop of bright white. White plus a bold color is a hot trend we are seeing in fashion and home this season.
It’s All About the Hand-Sewn Details
There are a ton of hand-sewn design elements in this bedding. So many of our quilts are quilted by hand, and this one goes above and beyond. This design’s hand-cut shapes are bordered with more hand-stitching to make each motif pop. The stitching and quilting add depth and dimension to enhance the beauty of this design. It’s a quilt to cherish and an artful addition to any guestroom, master suite, or quilt collection.
