We caught up with Marissa Stephenson, SELF Magazine Fitness Editor, for a little exercise motivation. Here are her tips for getting going.
I used to be so self-conscious in yoga classes. I can blow through a track workout and love to lift heavy, but ask me to hold Crow, and I’m a mess. I finally realized that no one else is paying attention to what I’m doing — they’re worried about balancing their own pose. So don’t ever feel stupid for trying.”
ON WORKING OUT
Whenever I’m feeling ‘eh’ about a workout, I remember this study that found that an exercise high can last for up to 12 hours. It’s so worth going to the gym for 30 minutes!”
One of the best things I’ve done as a runner is to start strength training more. It’s helped make me faster, I can run for longer, and I can feel myself powering up hills that I used to dread. I try to fit in a session with weights at least two or three times a week.”
