Call it houndstooth, dogtooth, or puppytooth (when the pattern is smaller), we adore this iconic print.
Quick history lesson: the houndstooth pattern is Scottish in origin and was made from alternating dark and light threads of woven wool. It spread from Scottish sheepherding outerwear to European and American men’s suits. In the 1960s, legendary designers from Christian Dior to Geoffrey Beene began printing (instead of weaving), the black-and-white jagged check pattern onto their women’s wear.
Now the houndstooth motif can be found everywhere and in every color. We love the versatility of houndstooth, which can be subtle or bold, woven or printed, and preppy or mod.
