THE ART OF INTARSIA

Intarsia knits are weaving their way into some of our favorite pieces this fall, from a spot-on dot sweater to a charming chickadee-crested crewneck.

Why do we heart intarsia (pronounced in-tar-zhea) so?

The technique means the pattern is knit right in, inlaid like a jigsaw, rather than sewn or printed on top. This process has deep fashion roots (sweaters of the ’40s and ’50s were all about the intarsia design), but the look is clean and contemporary in its new iteration. It’s a modern way to do novelty — charming without crossing the line into kitschy.

Check out our current Women’s Sweaters collection for more examples of intarsia. Intarsia designs are popping up for kids, too — and check out our previous post here.
